Pammy Johal – Backbone

Pammy Johal grew up in Coventry. She’s a Sikh of Indian heritage and, obviously, a woman. Not all that unusual in Coventry, but as a Mountain Leader she is something of rarity.

Pammy is the director of Backbone, a Community Interest Company based in Scotland which works to promote inclusion in the outdoors.
In this episode we talk about her entry into the outdoors, how she fell in love with it immediately and the teachers who influenced her. We also talk about how she spent much time as a child camping with her father and that, despite this, she was concerned at how her family would react if she didn’t follow the expected path of marrying and starting a family.
